Description

Chris Cole of Artemis Capital Management explains why the average person doesn’t understand that a home is a levered investment. Although that is not bad on the surface, the average person or retiree would never lever their stock portfolio five times as people regularly do with their real estate investments. To balance the forces of the allegory of the hawk and serpent with counter-trend assets in a personal portfolio, according to Cole, real estate should be a part of that consideration. Things like employment are correlated to, and arguably driven by, the economic growth cycle. Housing is the same, but unlike employment it is a levered investment, so protecting your portfolio from the economic growth cycle becomes even more important to the average joe. Cole explains how exposed the average mortgage is to a potential tsunami of economic forces.
